I. Introduction
A. Salutations
2.0 Good day to all our esteemed invited guests, respected healthcare professionals, and distinguished members of the Offa Descendants Union of North America (ODUNA). It is with immense pride and profound honor that I stand before you today to deliver a lecture that reflects upon the extraordinary journey of service our town has embarked upon thus far.
3.0 First and foremost, I extend my heartfelt commendations to the visionary leadership of both past and present chairpersons of ODUNA. Their unwavering dedication to community service, coupled with a patriotic spirit, has propelled us to this remarkable milestone we celebrate today. My sincere gratitude also goes out to each member of ODUNA for their relentless commitment to uplifting our heritage and contributing to the betterment of humanity at large.
4.0 To our esteemed royal father, His Royal Majesty, Oba MufutauGbadamosiEsuwoye II, Ajagungbade I (Kabiyesiooo!), I offer my deepest respects and heartfelt greetings. Your presence, alongside the venerable High Chiefs and Chiefs—both traditional and honorary (K’ara o le ooo!)—underscores the rich cultural tapestry and enduring values that define Offa as a community grounded in pride, patriotism, and philanthropy.
5.0 I also wish to recognize the distinguished members of the Offa Descendants Union (ODU), representing both national and local branches, as well as the esteemed gentlemen of the press present here today. Your collective presence enriches our gathering and accentuates the essential nature of collaboration in propelling sustainable development. Each of you plays an indispensable role in shaping the narratives that influence our society and foster transformative change within our communities.
6.0 This gathering serves not merely as a festive occasion but as an invitation to engage in profound reflection on the ideals of pride, patriotism, and philanthropy that fundamentally characterize the Offa community and drive its developmental aspirations. As both an academic and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), I find deep inspiration at the dynamic intersection of legal advocacy, public policy, and community empowerment. Today, I address you not solely as a practitioner in the legal sphere but as an ardent advocate for community-driven development. It is an honor to explore avenues for collaboration, growth, and empowerment that lie ahead of us.
7.0 The indomitable spirit of Offa resonates on myriad levels. Our pride in our cultural heritage, our patriotism reflected in our commitment to giving back to the community, and our philanthropic endeavors in support of those in need collectively define our identity as Offa indigenes. Offa people are unique indeed. We are defined by a rich cultural heritage, marked by resilience, unity and strong family values. These values emphasize good character, and communal progress and serve as a foundation for inspiring positive change. Offa people reflects core Yoruba values – values of leadership grounded in discipline, integrity and a commitment to nation building. I urge us all adopt a narrative that critiques while uplifting, project rather than destroy as well as embrace politics of social progress and development which should not diminish the dignity of our people. We need to focus on innovation, cultural achievements, systemic reforms and the successes of our people. We should foster mutual respect and pride among our people and our neighbours. We should encourage policies and programmes that will strengthen ties beyond our borders and address initiatives in governance, education and empowerment programmes that will address the critical needs of our people. We should embrace leadership the prioritizes accountability, discipline and national unity. Our people through proactive engagements and attitudinal chemistry can influence how the people outside perceive us as a people. While addressing failures that we may have experienced in the past, we should however do so through a lens of respect and hope, both of which are critical to our collective progress going forward. We should foster collaborations, promote shared values and inspire change within and outside our borders by integrating the values of good character, discipline and unity as proud ambassadors of the Yoruba heritage. Where necessary, as part of the process of reforms and patriotism, our people should champion a message the critiques without disowning, uplifts without ignoring challenges and inspires towards a shared vision of progress. It is in this sense that the theme of this 10th year Medical Mission Anniversary is quite timely and appropriate. The theme is ‘Reflecting, Renewing and rebuilding’, this is the time for us as people to reflect on our core values, renew our commitment to those values and rebuild those values across all strata of our society. Every one of us present must be involved in carrying out this process that will ultimately lead to radical transformation of our people in particular and our community in general. By reflecting, we mean casting back, having a mirrorlike effect or thinking, pondering, or meditating. To renew means to increase the life of or replace something old. Rebuilding implies the process of building something (such as a city, building, etc) again after it has been damaged or destroyed.
Against this background, this paper is structured into 10 parts. Immediately following the introduction is Part 1 which examines the case of Offa township: Part 2examines the subject ‘Pride – Building Ownership and Identity’: Part 3 analyzes the subject of ‘Philanthropy – Encouraging Generosity and Support’: Part 4 focuses on the ‘Interplay Between Pride, Patriotism, and Philanthropy’: Part 5examines the ‘Role of Pride in Community Development: Reflecting on the Legacy of Offa’s Community Achievements: Part 6is on the subject of ‘Renewing the Spirit of Service and Patriotism as a Catalyst for Community Progress in Offa’: Part 7 discusses the challenge of ‘Building a Future Through Collective Giving and Selflessness’: Part 8addresses the subject of ‘Implementing the Offa Model in Other Communities’: Part 9 focuses on ‘Positioning Offa as the “Dubai of Africa”’: Part 10 concludes the paper by making suggestions around the theme of this presentation.
Part 1:
The Case of Offa Township
8.0 Offa Township, located in Kwara State, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, entrepreneurial spirit, and close-knit community. Despite challenges such as limited infrastructure, education gaps, and youth unemployment, the people of Offa have leveraged pride, patriotism, and philanthropy to drive development.
In the course of researching this paper in the context of the theme of this conference and the topic assigned to me by the organizers, I came across a write up currently circulating in the social media describing the values that characterized our community development in the past, I quote verbatim “in the 1930s 8 men came together to think of establishing a Community Secondary School for their town, Offa. Four of them were Muslims and 4 were Christians.
The 4 Muslims were-
- AlhajiAliyuOlatinwo,
- AlhajiGbadamosiIjaiya,
- AlhajiIlesanmiGiwa and
- AlhajiJatto.
They were the richest men in the community. They were uneducated but successful businessmen.
The 4 Christians were not so rich but they were educated and more enlightened. They were:
- Pa Abraham Oyediran,
- Pa Onawola
- Pa Bilewu and
- Pa Oyeleke
Pa Oyediran was so educated that he was already a Principal in the famous Methodist Boys High School, Lagos. The rich Muslims brought money, while the educated Christians brought intellectual resources and planning to establish the first community secondary school in Northern Nigeria in 1943 (and present day Kwara State).
That was how Offa Grammar School was birthed. Before then, the very few high school educated Offa indigenes had to travel to Lagos for education. Now, they had a school at home.
Offa Grammar School has produced some of the finest Nigerians. They include the current Emir of Ilorin, Justice Gambari; General Alani Akinrinade (former Chief of Army Staff); General David Jemibewon (former Governor of old Oyo State); Justice Ayo Salami (former President of Federal Court of Appeal); Mr. Dele Belgore, SAN (guber aspirant in Kwara); Alhaji Kola Belgore (Former Chairman of AMCON); late Oba OladeleOlasore, former CEO of First Bank and Finance Minister; Mr. John Dara, former presidential aspirant.
The vision of these 8 great men that worked for the establishment of a secondary school in their community also benefited them personally as all of them produced children who went on to become hugely successful.
AlhajiOlatinwo produced a governor (Air Commodore SalaudeenLatinwoLatinwo, Kwara, 1984-85) from his children. He had many other successful children and grandchildren including the immediate past Chief Medical Director of University of Ilorin University Teaching Hospital, Professor Olatinwo. AlhajiIjaiya produced several Professors and Engineers from his children. AlhajiGiwa and AlhajiJatto also produced several wealthy businessmen as children.
Among Pa Oyediran’s children were Mr. Cecil Oyediran, first ICAN President from Northern Nigeria (1973/1974) and Professor A.B.O. Oyediran, former VC of University of Ibadan.
Noteworthy that Mr. Oyediran the accountant was the first Nigerian to become a partner in an international Accounting Firm, Coopers &Leybrands (Now KPMG) in the 1970s. Pa Onawola’s son was also one of the first 120 chartered accountants in Nigeria. He became one in 1965! He was the Chief Tax Officer of the old Northern region.
A third early Chartered Accountant from Offa, Prince YunusOyeleke, also qualified in 1965 (the 105th CA in Nigeria by registration number) and became a partner in Akintola Williams & Co. He was also a former President of Security & Exchange Commission. Their fathers helped education in Offa and they were rewarded with successful children and a blessed heritage.
Most of them schooled in Offa Grammar School. Their fathers had the resources to send them to school in Lagos or Ibadan but decided to establish a school in Offa, so the children of other poor people can also go to a community school.”
9.0 The communal vision that translated into the establishment of Offa Grammar School in the 1930s has remained with Offa people up till date. Recently, Offa Metropolitan Club (OMC), elite club comprising of influential Offa professionals across board pooled resources together to establish a multi-million naira Offa Medical Centre to cater for the health care needs of Offa community and other elements within and outside the city. The ultra-modern medical facility built two years ago at a cost of 350 million Naira which is now worth over N1 billion Naira with the medical equipments and furnishings that have been put in place since the completion of physical structure since 2022. The Centre now position’s Offa as a pioneer and pacesetter in quality and affordable community health care delivery in Nigeria. The effort, which entirely is the initiative of Offa Metropolitan Club, underscores the resilience, communal, and can-do spirit of Offa people. The vision was conceived under the leadership of OMC’s pioneer President, Dr Sarah AladeOON,. The OMC medical centre has recently commenced clinical services.
10.0 This lecture transcends a mere celebration of ODUNA’s impact; it stands as a tribute to the enduring legacy of self-reliance and communal strength that characterizes the Offa people. Let us seize this opportunity to reinforce our bonds and cultivate a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility. Together, we can reaffirm our commitment to progress and prosperity—not only for the present but for generations yet to come.
11.0 Community development thrives on shared values and collective action. When individuals are driven by pride in their identity, patriotism toward their community, and philanthropy through active support, the result is a dynamic and sustainable framework for progress.
This paper presents a conceptual framework called the Offa Model, based on Pride, Patriotism, and Philanthropy, and investigates how it can be mobilized for meaningful development. Using Offa Township in Kwara State of Nigeria as a case study, I demonstrate how such principles lead to the building of resilient and forward-looking community.
12.0 The Offa Model revolves around three interconnected pillars:
a. Pride (Ownership): Creating a sense of identity and emotional attachment to the community.
b. Patriotism (Loyalty): Inspiring dedication and collective effort for progress.
c. Philanthropy (Active Giving): Encouraging the sharing of resources, time, and skills for the common good.
Together, these elements form a cycle that enhances social cohesion, mobilizes resources, and strengthens community resilience.
13.0 The focus of today’s lecture—entitled “Pride, Patriotism, and Philanthropism – Offa: A Model of Community Development,” framed under the theme “Reflecting, Renewing, and Rebuilding”—provides an enriching landscape through which to examine the transformative power of unity in community development. The historical narrative of Offa is replete with self-help projects and initiatives that highlight the spirit of philanthropy and resilience, rendering it a beacon for community success. It is essential, before delving deeper, to acknowledge the historical significance that the people of Offa place on self-help projects, which have been the cornerstone of our community’s progress for generations.
Part 2:
14.0 Pride – Building Ownership and Identity
Pride reflects a community’s sense of identity, self-worth, and commitment to preserving its culture and achievements. It fosters ownership, motivating residents to care for and improve their surroundings.
Pride drives development by:
i. Enhancing cultural preservation.
ii. Building emotional connections that drive participation in local initiatives.
iii. Encouraging proactive care of community assets.
Offa community takes pride in its rich cultural traditions, particularly the annual Ijakadi Festival. The festival, celebrated with wrestling competitions and cultural displays, honors the historical legacy of equality and bravery among the people of Offa.
This celebration strengthens community bonds and attracts visitors, boosting local commerce and tourism.
The community also take immense pride in its achievements in sports, particularly football. Offa has produced talented athletes who serve as role models for the youth.
15.0 Patriotism – Fostering Dedication and Loyalty
Patriotism is the unwavering loyalty and commitment to one’s community, driving individuals to prioritize collective goals over personal interests.
Patriotism drives development by:
i. Uniting the community toward common objectives.
ii. Encouraging volunteering and participation in development projects.
Patriotism among Offa’s residents has led to the establishment of local schools and libraries through collective effort.
These institutions provide quality education to young people and address the gaps in public funding.
When public resources were insufficient, residents mobilized funds to construct markets, community halls, and water supply systems.
During environmental crises such as flooding, the community has demonstrated solidarity by providing shelter, food, and financial aid to affected families.
Patriotism builds resilience, ensuring no individual is left behind in difficult times.
Part 3:
16.0 Philanthropy – Encouraging Generosity and Support
Philanthropy is the act of giving time, money, and resources for the betterment of society. It plays a vital role in addressing community needs and closing development gaps.
Philanthropy drives development by:
i. Providing funding for essential infrastructure and services.
ii. Encouraging the sharing of skills and resources to empower others.
iii. Fostering a culture of collective responsibility.
Local leaders and residents frequently organize fundraising campaigns to support community projects, such as building health clinics, repairing roads, and equipping schools.
Successful individuals and organizations from Offa have established scholarship programs to support education for underprivileged youth.
Philanthropic donations have been instrumental in establishing healthcare facilities and providing medical outreach programs, particularly in rural areas of Offa.
Part 4
17.0 I. The Interplay Between Pride, Patriotism, and Philanthropy
In Offa Township, these elements intersect seamlessly:
Pride in cultural heritage and sports inspires residents to participate in development initiatives.
Patriotism fosters loyalty and volunteerism, particularly during times of need.
Philanthropy enables the execution of critical projects, addressing infrastructure, education, and healthcare needs.
For example, the annual Ijakadi Festival reflects pride in tradition, unites the community through patriotic celebrations, and often raises funds to support community projects.
18.0 The legacy of Offa is steeped in remarkable achievements spanning education, security, healthcare, and infrastructure—each rooted deeply in the principles of pride, patriotism, and philanthropy. These core values have not only propelled our town’s trajectory towards development but have also positioned it as an exemplar of community-driven progress.
19.0 To provide a comprehensive exploration of the theme at hand, I have structured my presentation into several key areas of focus. The first area will reflect upon the enduring legacy of Offa’s community achievements. The second area will emphasize the urgent need to renew our spirit of service and commitment to Offa. Finally, the last area will delve into the critical importance of building our future through collective giving and selflessness.
The Offa Model—built on Pride, Patriotism, and Philanthropy—demonstrates a powerful approach to sustainable community development. The case of Offa Township in Kwara State illustrates how these values can unite people, mobilize resources, and drive meaningful progress. By embracing this model, communities can achieve resilience, inclusivity, and shared prosperity.
Part 5
II. The Role of Pride in Community Development: Reflecting on the Legacy of Offa’s Community Achievements
20.0 Offa’s legacy stands as a powerful testament to the immense pride its people have for their cultural heritage and collective identity. Central to this pride is a steadfast commitment to progress and an ability to harness the strength of community collaboration to overcome various challenges.
Offa and the stereotype
21.0 Notwithstanding the Offa unique pride as a people may have been misrepresented in some quarters. An average Offa man or woman loathes cheating and will deploy all arsenal at his/her disposal to fight for justice and equity. This is captured in the phrase: “laareBuureokan o gbodojokan” Some may have interpreted the Offa passionate quest for justice as unnecessary display of pride and arrogance. This is certainly not correct and indeed reflects the tragedy of a single story. The consequences of a single story are overwhelming and frightening. The words of foremost novelist, ChimammandaAdichie“The consequence of a single story is this: It robs people of dignity. It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes how we are different rather than how we are similar – the single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they aren’t true, but they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”
Perhaps this great occasion provides a unique opportunity to debunk this stereotype assessment of Offa people. We are decent. We are hardworking. We cherish our heritage and reflects the omoluabi culture of core values. We are obsessed with the theory of justice and equity and we fight with every ounce of our blood to protect the virtues of equity and justice. We will rather work hard for survival than beg for sustenance. We will not cringe nor sacrifice our pride for leftovers. We will not play second fiddle because we are innately gifted and hugely talented. These attributes and others are what is mistaken as pride or arrogance. We disagree. Offa people reflect some of the best humans on mother earth. Therefore, rather than describe them as arrogance, the correct description will be that they are decent and virtuous.
Notable achievements reflect this collective resolve and define Offa’s narrative as a flourishing and resourceful community.
22.0 The establishment of Offa Grammar School (OGS) in 1943 is a prime example of Offa’s pioneering spirit. Recognizing the scarcity of quality educational institutions at that time in Nigeria, the community rallied together to provide access to education for future generations. OGS was not just a school but a bold declaration of Offa’s self-reliance and foresight. The school has produced countless alumni who made significant contributions in diverse fields, thereby enhancing Offa’s status and advancing the narrative of educational empowerment.
23.0 Another cornerstone in Offa’s legacy is the Owode International Market, which represents the community’s entrepreneurial spirit. This vibrant hub of economic activity was conceived to promote not just individual prosperity but also collective well-being. The market has become a critical platform for local traders, facilitating the exchange of indigenous products and generating livelihoods for numerous families. Its success reflects Offa’s unity and shared purpose—an embodiment of turning vision into reality and significantly impacting the region’s economic landscape.
24.0 The founding of Offa’s first hospital and maternity home underscores the proactive nature of the community in addressing healthcare needs long before government interventions began. This initiative was driven by a profound sense of responsibility, showcasing the community’s commitment to safeguarding the health of its citizens. The establishment of healthcare facilities has not only improved health outcomes but has cultivated a culture of compassion and solidarity among residents. This spirit continues to inspire community-driven healthcare efforts that prioritize accessibility and well-being.
25.0 Beyond these historic achievements, Offa has continued to evolve. The establishment of MOPOL Barracks, ICT hubs, private universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education reflects a vibrant, evolving community focused on modern advancements and sustainability. Numerous initiatives propel Offa to international recognition, emphasizing the town’s resilience and adaptability in a rapidly changing world.
26.0 The milestones reached by Offa’s community, deeply rooted in a shared pride and unity, distinguish it as a place capable of monumental achievements through collaboration. This legacy of pride continues to inspire new initiatives that honor the past while addressing contemporary challenges. The work undertaken by organizations like ODUNA builds upon this enduring legacy, preserving the foundational values of resilience and resourcefulness while expanding opportunities for future generations.
27.0 Ultimately, Offa’s story is one of pride transformed into progress. The achievements of the past are not merely historical artifacts; they serve as active inspirations for ongoing development. This unwavering pride forms the bedrock of Offa’s development model—a framework for continuously reaching new heights. Amid these reflections, we are reminded of the transformative power that emerges when a community unites in pride, purpose, and belief in its potential. Offa’s narrative stands as a beacon for other communities, showcasing that remarkable progress, driven by unity and shared aspirations, is not just achievable but, indeed, inevitable.
Part 6
Renewing the Spirit of Service and Patriotism as a Catalyst for Community Progress in Offa
28.0 In Offa, patriotism transcends mere sentiment, manifesting as a deep and enduring commitment to the welfare and progress of the community. This spirit of service is intricately woven into the fabric of Offa’s collective identity, motivating individuals and organizations to take decisive actions in addressing communal needs. A striking embodiment of this patriotism is the work of the Offa Descendants Union of North America (ODUNA). Through its annual medical missions, ODUNA has provided life-saving healthcare interventions to thousands of residents. These missions extend beyond the immediate provision of medical care; they symbolize a profound sense of responsibility to bridge systemic gaps and ensure equitable access to essential health services for all.
29.0 The establishment of modern infrastructure, such as the OMC Medical Centre, further underscores this commitment. This state-of-the-art facility represents a transformative step toward meeting the healthcare needs of Offa’s growing population. Far more than just a physical structure, the OMC Medical Centre is a testament to the collective dedication to sustainable, high-quality healthcare. It stands as both a symbol of progress and a legacy for future generations, inspiring confidence in the community’s ability to overcome its challenges.
30.0 Renewing this patriotic spirit demands a proactive response to evolving challenges. Development is never static, and the needs of the community continue to expand and diversify. To sustain this momentum, initiatives must be scaled up and aligned with global best practices. Strengthening partnerships with international organizations is particularly crucial, as these collaborations can provide advanced training and resources to local healthcare professionals. Such efforts equip them to deliver world-class care, reinforcing Offa’s capacity for resilience and innovation.
31.0 This renewal is not about maintaining the status quo but about elevating Offa’s standing as a leader in sustainable community development. Patriotism in Offa is marked by a profound sense of collective responsibility—an acknowledgment that the community’s progress hinges on the contributions of its people. This ethos drives investment in transformative projects, talent development, and the creation of resilient, inclusive systems. By revitalizing the spirit of service and commitment, Offa reaffirms its role as a model of patriotism in action, showcasing how love for one’s community can inspire impactful and enduring change.
32.0 The essence of Offa’s patriotism lies in its steadfast dedication to shared progress, a testament to the power of unity to transform challenges into opportunities. Looking ahead, the renewal of this patriotic spirit will be pivotal in sustaining development and ensuring Offa continues to thrive as a beacon of collective action and shared purpose. In a compelling reflection on patriotism, former Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, during his 2019 Inaugural Address, described it as an “abiding sense of belonging and community.”
33.0 Baker argued that this spirit should be the cornerstone of a nation’s strength, urging people to embrace positive and optimistic approaches to governance while rejecting divisive and polarizing politics. His remarks hold relevance for Offa, where political and ideological divides occasionally threaten the unity essential for collective progress. Recent events in Offa reveal that members of opposing political factions sometimes view one another with suspicion, creating an alarming divide that undermines the unity patriotism seeks to achieve.
34.0 Drawing lessons from Governor Baker’s insights, Offa’s unique sense of patriotism, rooted in belonging and commitment to the common good, serves as a unifying force. Addressing challenges such as healthcare access, education, and economic development requires collaboration that transcends individual differences. By fostering a shared vision for progress, Offa can reject divisive narratives, instead emphasizing the collective impact of its efforts. These challenges, highlighted in the broader political landscape, remind us of the enduring need for unity and cooperation within the community.
35.0 As Offa navigates its path forward, it must nurture a patriotic spirit that values inclusivity and encourages all members of the community to contribute to shared goals. In doing so, the town not only honors its rich heritage but also sets a powerful example of how true patriotism can drive meaningful change. By rejecting divisiveness and embracing a unifying vision, Offa can reaffirm its position as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that patriotism is not a tool for division but a force for unity and collective progress.
Part 7
Building a Future Through Collective Giving and Selflessness
36.0 Philanthropy in Offa serves as a cornerstone of community progress, exemplifying the transformative potential of collective giving. The residents of Offa have long recognized that genuine advancement emerges not solely from individual endeavors but from the collective commitment to uplift the entire community. This ethos of selflessness is intricately woven into Offa’s cultural identity, where acts of giving transcend mere charity and become a defining characteristic of communal life.
37.0 One of the most significant expressions of this philanthropic spirit is evident through the initiatives undertaken by various individuals and organizations that have contributed to the development of Offa. While it is impractical to enumerate all contributors due to space constraints, it is crucial to highlight the pivotal role of the Offa Descendants Union (ODU), which has championed Offa’s development for nearly 90 years. Additionally, the Offa Descendants Union of North America (ODUNA) has made remarkable contributions to the community.
38.0 ODUNA’s efforts, which include renovating healthcare facilities, donating essential medical equipment, and supporting the training of healthcare professionals, have substantially improved health outcomes within the community. These initiatives extend beyond short-term relief; they represent strategic investments in Offa’s healthcare infrastructure. By empowering local healthcare providers with enhanced resources and training, ODUNA has facilitated the establishment of a sustainable healthcare model that ensures access to quality medical services for both current and future generations.
39.0 Beyond the healthcare sector, philanthropy in Offa plays a critical role in addressing broader communal needs through the funding and sustenance of developmental projects. Community-driven efforts have been instrumental in constructing schools, markets, and other infrastructures that are vital for social and economic advancement. The Owode International Market, for instance, stands as a testament to Offa’s entrepreneurial spirit, transforming collective contributions into a vibrant economic hub. Similarly, the establishment and enhancement of educational institutions underscore Offa’s commitment to education and empowerment, ensuring that future generations are equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to thrive.
40.0 Furthermore, philanthropy in Offa has made significant strides in promoting preventive healthcare. Through educational campaigns and awareness initiatives, the community has empowered individuals to prioritize their health and adopt healthier lifestyles. Programs that emphasize prevention over treatment, including regular health screenings and lifestyle education, have contributed to a reduction in the prevalence of preventable diseases. By fostering a culture of health consciousness, Offa is proactively addressing long-term wellness challenges and promoting a healthier future for its residents.
41.0 At the core of Offa’s philanthropic model is a profound commitment to inclusivity. This culture of selflessness ensures that progress is equitable and benefits all members of the community. Philanthropy in Offa is not merely about providing material support; it encompasses the creation of an environment where every community member feels empowered to contribute and thrive. Offa’s approach to philanthropy serves as a compelling example for other communities, demonstrating that when individuals unite around shared objectives, they can surmount challenges and construct a brighter future for all.
Part 8
42.0 Implementing the Offa Model in Other Communities
Step 1: Assess Community Needs – Conduct surveys and meetings to identify priority areas.
Step 2: Leverage Cultural Identity – Organize cultural festivals and sports events to foster pride.
Step 3: Mobilize Collective Effort – Encourage volunteerism and patriotism-driven projects.
Step 4: Engage Philanthropic Partners – Involve local leaders, businesses, and NGOs to provide resources for community development.
Step 5: Monitor and Evaluate – Continuously assess progress and adapt strategies for sustainable results.
Part 9
43.0 Positioning Offa as the “Dubai of Africa”
When I think of what Offa can potentially look like at its fullest potential, the city of Dubai comes to mind. Dubai – one of the seven emirates forming the United Arab Emirates, has rapidly transformed from a tiny trading port to a global city recognized for its modern architecture, vibrant economy, and growing tourism industry. Over the last few decades, strategic initiatives, innovative leadership, and an attractive business environment have propelled Dubai to the top of the world’s most desirable destinations for investors. This remarkable transformation is supported by numerous factors that collectively contribute to its growth and appeal. Some of the initiatives and factors that have contributed to the Dubai Transformation which we can learn from include:
a) its strategic location, business-friendly policies, excellent infrastructure, low taxes, and strong investment appeal across the Middle East.
b) Dubai has also embraced Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) as a cornerstone of its strategy to deliver public services and infrastructure projects, leveraging private sector expertise and investment. The value of PPP projects in the city has surged, surpassing $50 billion in recent years, underscoring the increasing reliance on this collaborative model.
c) Cultural preservation to preserve Dubai’s cultural heritage amidst rapid modernization. The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority spearheads initiatives to safeguard Emirati culture, ensuring it thrives alongside the city’s dynamic growth.
d) spearheading ambitious initiatives in renewable energy and sustainability which has helped Dubai emerge as a global leader in the energy sector.
e) investing heavily in entertainment and leisure. Dubai offers a diverse array of entertainment options, showcasing its status as a global hub for leisure and recreation. From massive theme parks like IMG Worlds of Adventure and Dubai Parks and Resorts to luxurious hotels and entertainment venues such as Dubai Opera, the city caters to both residents and visitors alike, significantly enhancing the quality of life in the region
f) Digital transformation. Dubai has emerged as a global frontrunner in digital transformation, harnessing advanced technologies to elevate government services, business environments, and overall quality of life for residents and visitors.
Part 10
44.0 Conclusion
As I approach the conclusion of my talk, it is fitting to reflect on the overarching theme that encapsulates our shared journey: “Pride, Patriotism, and Philanthropism – Offa: A Model of Community Development.” These words vividly capture the essence of Offa’s identity and serve as guiding principles behind its extraordinary achievements. The spirit of self-help, which has long defined the people of Offa, has elevated the community to a position of distinction as a beacon of growth and development. This collective ethos has shown that when a community unites around a common vision, challenges once deemed insurmountable can indeed be overcome. Nelson Mandela’s timeless observation, “It always seems impossible until it’s done,” aptly encapsulates Offa’s remarkable progress.
45.0 The Offa Descendants Union (ODU) exemplifies the power of unity and shared values in building systems of enduring progress. Beyond addressing immediate needs, Offa has established a robust foundation for sustainable development, underscoring its commitment to the long-term aspirations of its people. This legacy highlights a profound truth: genuine progress emerges when short-term actions are harmonized with a broader, forward-thinking vision. The principles of pride, patriotism, and philanthropism have become enduring pillars of Offa’s collective advancement, fostering a culture of unity, accountability, and inclusive growth.
46.0 Offa’s accomplishments stand as a compelling testament to the transformative power of collective action. Helen Keller’s words, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much,” resonate deeply with the collaborative spirit that has driven the community’s success. In a nation where government intervention often falls short in meeting the needs of its citizens, Offa’s achievements offer a powerful example of what determination, teamwork, and shared responsibility can accomplish. The ability to design and sustain systems that prioritize the well-being of its people demonstrates that unity, guided by purpose, can lead to extraordinary outcomes. Offa’s story transcends its locality; it serves as an inspiring blueprint for other communities seeking progress through self-help and mutual accountability.
47.0 As we celebrate these milestones, we must remain mindful of the road ahead. Offa holds a pivotal position as a “big brother” within Ibololand, particularly among communities in Kwara State. This unique status brings with it a responsibility to serve as a model and mentor to neighboring communities. The challenges that lie ahead demand sustained innovation, collaboration, and commitment. By fostering continued partnerships—internally within the community and externally with stakeholders—Offa can reimagine systems that prioritize equity, inclusion, and shared prosperity, ensuring no one is left behind. Through unity and strategic vision, the community is well-positioned to secure a brighter and more inclusive future.
48.0 Healthcare and education remain pivotal pillars of Offa’s sustainable development. These sectors, championed by organizations like ODUNA, reflect the community’s unwavering dedication to improving the quality of life for its people. The contributions of medical professionals, who volunteer their expertise, and community leaders, who tirelessly advocate for Offa’s progress, epitomize the ideals of pride, patriotism, and philanthropism. Their efforts serve as a reminder that transformative progress is driven by individuals and institutions dedicated to the common good.
49.0 In conclusion, Offa’s legacy is a shining testament to the enduring power of unity, vision, and determined action. Its collective achievements reaffirm its position as a model of sustainable development and a source of inspiration for generations to come. By continuing to embrace the principles of pride in its heritage, patriotism for a shared vision, and philanthropy as a mechanism for social advancement, Offa will remain a standard of what is possible through resilience, collaboration, and shared responsibility.
